President Museveni who is also the ruling NRM party presidential candidate has told the people to Lango to make wise decisions in the upcoming 2026 general election.
“Don’t listen to these people coming running around. They are not serious. This is not a theatre to act. This is real life and each thing you need to struggle. Whether you are talking of security or the economy, it needs serious analysis not propaganda,” Museveni said.
He was on Thursday addressing supporters at Alebtong Booma Grounds as he entered his second day of campaigns in Lango sub-region.
Museveni, who is being challenged by seven other candidates for the highest office in the land told the gathering in Alebtong that Uganda has been able to transform into a country loved b many, due to wise decisions by the NRM, warning against propagandists.
“The NRM message goes back to almost 65 years in the 1960s. By that time we were in the student movement . We saw the problems of Uganda and that’s how we started designing solutions. In the last 65 years of NRM in Uganda and Africa, our efforts have proved everyone wrong. We support what is right and oppose what is wrong.”
He explained that when NRM took power, it discarded diving the country on tribal lines which he said had earlier caused problems.
“Since we took power, you have never heard of those problems where one tribe massacres the other in the army. Even the people who were not with us we bring them on our side,” Museveni said referring to a January 1971 tribal massacre in the Ugandan Army .
It is reported that over 100 soldiers of the Acholi and Langi tribes who are said to have been loyal to Milton Obote were killed by other troops in an army garrison in Mbarara.
The massacre followed the overthrow of Obote by Amin and the killings are said to have been part of an effort to purge the army of potential dissidents and consolidate power, disproportionately affecting Acholi and Langi officers.
Speaking on Thursday, Museveni said such incidents can never happen in Uganda again.
“We don’t believe in division of tribes, religion or looking down upon women or youths. That’s why we try to bring up everybody because everybody is valuable. We worked for peace and we were able to achieve it . We have got a disciplined professional army. It is built professionally. We don’t look at tribes or religion in the army. We look at whether you are a good soldier or not. That’s why when recruiting we do it from every district. Every district has a quota. That’s how we have peace now,” Museveni told the crowd.
He said building on the peace ushered into the country, government has been able to ensure development in form of roads, electricity and piped water, mentioning several roads which have been tarmacked in Lango sub-region.
Museveni was however, quick to ask the people not to look at development so much but focus on creating wealth.
He explained that having wealth for individuals is better than having good roads.
“Even if you have tarmacked road and you are poor, you will return home to poverty waiting for you. Your children will not have clothes. Many leaders talk of roads, tarmac and electricity but even if there is tarmac, are you going to sleep on the road at night? Development is ours but wealth is mine as an individual, family or company.”
He urged the people of Lango to participate in wealth creation.
